Behind The Art
"There are some defeats more triumphant than victories."
The quote is from the French philosopher Montaigne. I have set the words in the context of the Crucifixion. I find the word “defeats” particularly sobering. The reason is that if I did not have the advantage of almost two thousand years of hindsight; if – say – I had been at the home of Lazarus with Jesus and the disciples, I probably would not have comprehended His promises of transcendence and glory. “No, no,” I would have objected, “this is a terrible idea. You’re still young and healthy. Why, you’re just getting started. Think of all the good you can still do.”
At this point – assuming I was lucky enough to escape being likened to Satan – He might have sighed, shaken His head, and given me that “you just don’t get it, do you” look. And, presumably, I would not have been alone in this. It all must have seemed so frightening and cruel.
