Behind The Art

As a result of Hurricane Floyd in 1999, my son Josh came home to discover our entire downstairs flooded, six inches more or less. He did the right thing. He did exactly what I would have done had I been at home. He called our neighbor Jim. (There are experiences in which God, unmistakably, makes Himself known to us through our friends.) Jim stepped through the door, took one look around, and went into action. With Joshua’s help he began moving the water with the push brooms and buckets he had brought, gradually draining the rooms. Chairs, tables, sofa were hauled upstairs. He got some large floor fans that ran for days drying out the carpeting.

The point I want to make, without enumerating each task, is that Jim’s initial reaction, the one that guided all his succeeding efforts, was the simple question “How can I help?”

In my sons’ activities and accomplishments in school and in the workplace, I am beginning to see the outlines of careers. I have never offered them much particular counseling in this connection, other than to express the hope that, on encountering the chaos, want, and pain of this life, they would roll up their sleeves and say “How can I help?”
