Behind The Art

It is significant that the branches “abide in” and grow from the vine. In that connection or relationship they are fruitful. They live a good life. If branches are not connected to the vine, ultimately they cannot be fruitful. A phrase I have used elsewhere in these commentaries seems pertinent: “The Lord has promised to make us free, not independent”.

So, a question that comes to mind right is, if “the branch and the vine” is the model for our binding and dependent relationship to the Lord, how do we think about freedom? Addressing Pharaoh, Aaron and Moses speak of freedom this way: “The Lord God of Israel says, ‘Let My people go, so they can worship Me’” (Exodus 5). Freedom is necessary, but it is freedom with a particular purpose. It is freedom within our relationship to God. Freedom and faith and faithful obedience are inextricable.
