Behind The Art
A friend of mine, a doctor in North Carolina, asked me to letter and illustrate these words from the Gospel of Matthew. He has an extensive geriatric practice. He wanted this scripture on the wall of his office to remind himself and his staff that they would be encountering, in each patient, a deeper reality than bodily frailty; a deeper reality than fears, depressions and mental vagueness. They would be encountering – the scripture implies – our Lord who, in his life on earth, knew little physical comfort or security; who was an outsider –vulnerable, often rejected, and ultimately abandoned.
