Behind the Art
Years ago, there was a phonograph record of baroque chorales in my family’s music collection. I have a memory of the album cover. It showed a sculpture of the Madonna and Child. The Child is holding an apple in His hand.
The Madonna and Child and an Apple appears to have been a popular theme in 15th and 16th century European painting and sculpture. Lucas Cranach the Elder gives us a Madonna and Child under a whole apple tree, 1518.
So, with the two Gardens as a background, we have the encounter between Jesus and the Apple, His mission already symbolic with the cross inside the apple and the apple seeds/nails/drops of blood.
Eden anticipates Gethsemane.
